The Artist Biography: Francis Ryan
The Inspiration Based in the shadows of the Wasatch Mountains in Cottonwood Heights, Utah, Francis "Frank" Ryan is an artist whose work explores the intersection of disciplined technique and the raw, unpredictable beauty of the natural world. After 15 years as an educator, Frank transitioned his focus to the canvas, bringing with him a teacher’s eye for detail and a lifelong passion for the outdoors.
The Process His current body of work, notably The Aspen Sessions, is defined by a high-energy, immersive perspective. By looking upward through the dense canopies of Utah’s iconic aspen groves, Frank captures the fleeting vibrance of the changing seasons. His style blends traditional landscape elements with modern, abstract "splatter" techniques—using physical movement to mimic the way light and wind interact with the forest floor.
The Vision Whether he is navigating the Nordic trails at Solitude or painting in his studio, Frank’s goal remains the same: to translate the quiet majesty of the mountains into a bold, tactile experience. His work is a celebration of the Wasatch—a visual tribute to the place he, his wife Lauren, and their two children call home.
"I don't just want to paint a forest; I want to capture the feeling of standing in the center of it, looking up, and realizing how small—and how connected—we really are."
